It is possible to have an OSS community that bypasses Apple's App Store

Jesse Grosjean, the developer of TaskPaper, a text based task manager has begun to open source some of his iPhone/iPad apps. To participate, you would have to pay $99 to Apple for the SDK and have a mac that could run it. Then, you could download the app to the device.

So, it is possible to have an open source community for the iPhone OS that bypasses the Apple Store.
