Ways of thinking about social networks

A lot of times when I hear geeks talk about social networks, I get the impression it's all about friends lists and being able to port your friends from one network to the other. I want to pose the problem differently:

Social networking is about finding people and connecting with them. Period.

That's the only social networking problem your social networking platform needs to solve.
